FDA & Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) Concerns

Dear Pet Lover,

Anytime a health alert might affect your fur baby, you naturally get concerned. So do we. That’s why I’m writing you today: to talk about the latest alert, provide facts, dispel fears, and reassert our commitment to your pet’s best health.

As you may have heard, the FDA is investigating links between diet and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a heart condition especially in dogs. Some people have sounded alarms about the possible role of grain-free diets in DCM.

At Health Extension, we always monitor the quality and suitability of our ingredients to keep your pet in the very best of health. As part of that commitment, our team of animal nutritionists—with 65 years of leadership in pet foods—keeps ahead of the latest news on issues like DCM. Here is what they know:

  • DCM is a serious heart condition, and it’s right to treat it seriously. Learn more about DCM and its symptoms here.
  • Some breeds are more genetically prone to DCM, especially larger breeds. You can find a list of these breeds here.
  • No one knows if there’s any link between DCM and grain-free diets. Articles in prestigious journals, like the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, clearly state that next to nothing is known so far about the role of diet in DCM.
  • The numbers of DCM cases reported to the FDA is very, very small. Between January 1, 2014 and April 30, 2019, the FDA received 524 reports out of an estimated 77 million pet dogs in the U.S. This is still unacceptable, of course—even one report of a suffering pet is one too many. However, the numbers do suggest that the issue, while important, will not affect most pets.
We will keep a close eye on further developments and do whatever is necessary to maintain the health of our pets. That includes updating our recipes if needed. In the meantime, we encourage you to do your own research to ensure you’re giving your pets the very best.

Giving your pets the very best, of course, is the whole reason our family has run Health Extension for three generations. It’s why we make every recipe with the finest ingredients. It’s why our formulas contain no wheat, corn, soy, GMO ingredients or artificial preservatives. It’s why we’re so proud of the fact that, in all these years, we’ve never had a recall.

Thank you, as always, for your faith in us. We will keep you apprised of anything we learn in the months to come. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact your Health Extension retailer or distributor.

Yours in pet health,
Brad Gruber
