Gut Check

There was a time when dog owners would assume that their dog just had gas and leave it at that. But manufacturers and retailers report that these days, dog owners are paying a lot closer attention to their dogs’ digestive health and what they can do to help improve it. A better understanding from pet owners and a demand for more solutions continues to drive the market for products in this category.

“The days of just assuming the dog has gas and leaving it at that are over,” said Heidi Nevala, president of Natura Petz Organics in Minneapolis. “There is so much more emphasis on the digestive system for humans that they’re paying more attention to it for their pets as well. People know that the digestive system is directly related to so many other things, including immune health, skin and coat, and just a general reflection of their well-being.”

Why pet owners are buying more wet pet food

Executives at Bravo Pet Food and Holistic Health Extension believe demographics and demand trends favor continued growth in the wet pet food category. These pet food industry entrepreneurs shared their insights into how to innovate in the wet pet food category, and what drives its growth.

The present and future engines of pet food sales, millennials and baby boomers, increasingly tend towards owning cats or smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas, which can be fed wet pet food more affordably than a Saint Bernard. At the same time, pet food trends, including grain-free, raw and high-protein, lend themselves well to wet dog and cat food.

“Millennials inherently spend more money on their pets to ensure they are well fed,” said Brad Gruber, president and COO of Holistic Health Extension. “The real strength in growth in this category is driven by baby boomers, where spending is growing the most due to the number of households headed by this group.”

Grain-free pet food rebrand succeeds for Health Extension

Redesigned pet food packaging and rebranded products helped Health Extension Pet Care increase sales and expand the territory of their grain-free cat and dog food line, Brad Gruber, president and COO of Health Extension, told Petfood Industry.

Last year, Health Extension recently had launched its grain-free Allergix line when Petfood Industry profiled the company. That line now has been completely overhauled and is marketed as Health Extension Grain-Free.

The pet food rebranding efforts worked, and the revamped dog and cat food line has been well received, according to Gruber.

Vets Choice has changed its name to Health Extension Pet Care. The new name derives from the company’s popular line of pet food.

The company’s name will be the only change. According to Health Extension Pet Care, the company will still have the same UPCs and product numbers. Pet Industry All-Stars

It was another year of growth for the pet industry, which is expected to surpass the $62-billion mark by the end of 2016, according to the American Pet Products Association. While much of this success can be attributed to the continued trend toward treating pets as valued members of the family, manufacturers have also played a key role by making pet ownership easier and more fun for consumers while giving pet stores the opportunity to stand out in a very competitive retail landscape by keeping assortments fresh and engaging.

Health Extension: Evolving for pet food industry success

Health Extension Pet Care has been busy. In the last 12 months the New York-based premium holistic pet food company has launched three new grain-free formulas under the name Allergix, focusing on the needs of allergy-sensitive pets in the market. The line’s latest formula, Buffalo, Whitefish & Chickpea, has been the most successful product launch in the company’s history. Over the last five years, Health Extension has consistently maintained a 25% annual growth rate—a trend that has continued throughout 2015 so far. And in March 2015, the company officially changed its name from “Vets Choice,” aiming to evolve its brand and better align itself with its new mission statement.

“Our name change and new mission statement were more of an evolution than a change,” says Brad Gruber, chief operating officer of Health Extension Pet Care. “They go back to the reason we started the company: not to have an investment fund buy us out, not to be just another brand on the shelf, but to provide our retailers with outstanding products they can trust. As both shoppers and retailers have come to trust the Health Extension name over time, it made sense to move our whole brand in that direction.”

The company’s new mission statement, says Gruber, is simple yet genuine, getting to the heart of what Health Extension stands for: “Our family is dedicated to providing independent pet store owners with foods they can be proud to sell as their own,” says the statement. “By committing to the finest holistic ingredients at the best possible price, we give pets the nutrition they need—and retailers the competitive advantage they need to thrive.”
