Choosing The Best Dog Food with Natural, Whole-Food Ingredients you can Recognize

Health Extension has been formulating the best natural dog food and pet products since 1963. Even back then, we knew that the best way to give your pet longer, healthier years was through an exceptional diet that parallels the quality we expect in our own food. That’s why Health Extension’s natural dog food and natural dog treats are only formulated with ingredients you can recognize.

If you want to see the difference for yourself, just pick up your current dog or cat food and compare the listed ingredients with one of our all-natural pet food products. See the difference? Even leading, big-brand-name dog foods are often produced with filler ingredients and tongue-twisting preservatives. We’ve put together a comprehensive list of harmful ingredients commonly used in pet foods that you can view here to get an idea of where those ingredients come from and their effect on your pet’s health.

Happily, there has been a huge movement toward producing healthier, more natural pet foods and treats as pet parents have gotten savvy about feeding their dogs and cats a more natural diet. But deceptive marketing and confusing nutrition labels are preventing pet parents from choosing the best pet food for their breed. Nothing feels worse than purchasing something you thought was ideal for your pet only to investigate further and realize that the product really, well, isn’t.

At Health Extension, we wanted to remove all doubt by producing the best natural pet food with whole-food ingredients and naturally, sustainably sourced meats, vegetables, fruits, and fats. Search the label of any of our pet foods or pet treats and you’ll see that our ingredients are consciously chosen and ethically derived from traceable-to-the-source farms that you can trust.

Let’s dive into some of those awesome ingredients and explain why they’re so beneficial to your pet’s natural diet!

Dog Food with Free-Range Meat

All Health Extension products are formulated with select cuts of organically raised, free-range meats that never contain growth hormones or steroids. We proudly use deboned chicken and whole eggs rather than using leftovers from the production process. We even went all the way to Australia and New Zealand to source hormone, antibiotic, and steroid-free lamb – an excellent protein alternative for pets who have sensitivities to the most commonly used chicken.

When it comes to fish, it’s an optimal source of natural protein and healthy fat. Health Extension products use high-quality deboned fish like salmon, whitefish, menhaden, and green lipped mussels. These omega-rich protein sources are known to help improve joint health by reducing inflammation while delivering healthy levels of vitamin B.

Dog Food with Highly Digestible Grains

Your dog is engineered to thrive off a protein-first diet. But in some cases, their digestive health can benefit from high-quality, highly digestible grains. At Health Extension, we don’t use grains as filler, like many popular dog food brands. Instead, our high-quality grains are used to increase nutrient intake for sensitive dogs. We use brown rice – the same grade that you would purchase from your grocery store – in our products.

For fiber, we use chickpeas, lentils, and our star ingredient: oatmeal. All of which are human-grade and non-GMO. And best part is, they have not been irradiated, contain no processing, chemical, nutritional, or medicinal additives.

Dog Food with Healthy Fats

Fats are a vital and necessary component to any pets’ diet. They provide so many health benefits, from optimal brain development and digestive health to healthy skin and a shiny coat! But the fat source is critical, so at Health Extension, we ensure our products contain only the best sources of naturally occurring fats.

Many of our products include Coconut Oil: one of the best sources of non-animal fat for your pet! Coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. It reduces digestion inflammation while increasing nutrient absorption and helps balance the metabolism. Coconut oil is also known to reduce reactions to allergens and helps support healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are fortified into our foods to help with brain function and development while also providing healthy skin and a shiny coat. We source ours from clarified chicken fat, DHA, Flaxseed, Primrose Oil, Sunflower Oil and Salmon Oil.

Dog Food with Fruits and Vegetables

Sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, spinach, and blueberries contain natural sources of soluble fiber and we just LOVE using these, and other farm-fresh ingredients, in our pet food products! The components from our whole fruits and vegetables provide the main source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in our pet foods.

Carrots contain a good source of low-fat soluble fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamin A. Similarly, Pumpkin delivers a healthy dose of fiber and beta-carotene! Tomatoes are rich in vitamin E and C, beta-carotene and are high in antioxidants – just like blueberries! And dogs just love sweet potatoes. We love them because they offer an excellent source of fiber as well as vitamins A, C, E, B5 & B6, potassium and manganese – a trace mineral needed for growth, development, and metabolism.

Of course, we can’t forget healthy greens! We use spinach as a great source of iron, vitamin K and vitamin C. Peas are also an excellent source of b complex vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin K - and helps regulate your pet’s appetite. Parsley is high in minerals & vitamins, including vitamin C, and helps the body fight off cancer causing pathogens, while sage provides brain support and can even aide in reducing cholesterol.

Dog Food with Superfoods

You’ve heard of superfoods – those which offer dynamic health benefits beyond just nutrition, supporting healthy longevity and even healing properties, right? Well, Health Extension has put these powerful superfoods to work in many of our pet food products! These include ingredients like turmeric, apple cider vinegar, to controversial ginger, green tea, kelp, spirulina – and more! These ingredients are hard at work supporting the digestive track, giving the immune system a boost, and improving heart health all the while offering your pet healthier, more vitalized years!

We’re using SO many superfoods in our pet products that we’d like to invite you to learn more about each of them by visiting our ingredient page, or our comprehensive article on the topic, where you can discover all the awesome benefits that are delivered to your pet through them and see where they’re sourced from via our interactive “traceability” map
